Editorial policy

The future template is the future prong

The standard three-pronged approach addresses relevant past experiences, present triggers, and anticipated future situations. A future template supports an adaptive response in a specific upcoming scenario after the case formulation and preceding work indicate it is appropriate.

It is not manifestation, generic positive visualization, prediction, or a shortcut around unresolved past or present material. The chosen situation, desired response, obstacles, and readiness must connect to the treatment plan rather than to a software-generated script.

Future template and flashforward are different clinical tasks

A flashforward is a feared imagined catastrophe that may itself function as a target. A future template rehearses adaptive engagement with a realistic anticipated situation. Confusing the two can conceal active disturbance or ask the patient to rehearse success while a feared outcome remains dominant.

The therapist also distinguishes unprocessed memory networks from an actual knowledge or skill deficit. Processing cannot supply missing practical competence. Skills teaching, environmental change, safeguarding, referral, or another intervention may be required before or alongside future-oriented work.

Readiness and specificity prevent empty rehearsal

Define the concrete situation, cues, adaptive cognition or response, body state, behavioral steps, likely obstacles, and what successful coping would realistically look like. Review current safety, consent, stability, and whether present triggers still activate significant disturbance.

The work remains responsive rather than mechanical. New disturbance, dissociation, confusion, or a feeder memory can require assessment, preparation, a return to earlier prongs, or consultation. Completion is a clinical judgment, not the number of sets delivered.

Use the printable worksheet as documentation, not a script

The browser-only map records the treatment-plan link, anticipated situation, desired response, exact cognition and VOC if elicited, work actually delivered, obstacles, consent, closure, uncertainty, and follow-up. It is not submitted or autosaved and should contain only necessary detail.

EMDRSuite can organize therapist-entered future targets and session notes. It does not write scripts, decide readiness, distinguish a flashforward from a future template, identify skill deficits, or replace protocol training and supervision.

FAQ

EMDR future template worksheet

What is the future template in EMDR?

It is future-oriented work for a specific anticipated situation within the past-present-future treatment framework and the therapist's case formulation.

Is a flashforward the same as a future template?

No. A flashforward is a feared imagined catastrophe that may be a target; a future template supports an adaptive response to an anticipated situation.

Can a future template replace skills training?

No. An actual knowledge or behavioral skill deficit requires appropriate teaching, practice, support, or referral.

Does EMDRSuite generate future-template scripts?

No. It supports organization and records but does not generate clinical scripts or treatment decisions.
