Name the relationship before counting the hour
EMDRIA distinguishes consultation integrated into basic training, consultation toward a certification credential, and case consultation that is not for credentialing. EMDR Europe may use clinical supervision or consultation within national accreditation pathways. Similar conversation formats can have different purposes, eligibility rules, evaluative duties, and documentation.
Supervision also has a different professional and legal meaning in many jurisdictions. EMDRIA notes that consultation does not carry the same legal liability as supervision. Titles alone do not settle responsibility: licensure rules, employment, contracts, the therapist's independence, and local law determine the actual relationship.
Use a written agreement and verify who can sign
Before beginning, define the purpose, whether hours are intended to count toward a named pathway, consultant or supervisor status, format, fees, cancellation, confidentiality, case-material limits, recording, evaluation, feedback, conflicts, record retention, ending, and who remains clinically responsible. Confirm requirements directly with the awarding body before relying on future acceptance.
Credential consultation often needs an approved consultant, hours within a specified period, individual or group distinctions, and formal confirmation. Case consultation may support a complex decision but not count toward a credential. A helpful discussion is not retroactively transformed into qualifying hours by entering it in software.
Protect patients when discussing clinical work
Use the minimum information necessary and follow consent, confidentiality, employer, professional, and jurisdictional rules. Remove identifiers where possible, avoid ordinary email or consumer tools for sensitive material, and obtain specific permission before recording or showing any session. De-identification is a process, not merely deleting a name.
Consultation supports the therapist; it does not transfer treatment decisions or duty of care to an app. Document recommendations as consultation input, then record the treating clinician's own assessment, decision, rationale, follow-up, and unresolved uncertainty in the authorized clinical record.
Separate development records from patient records
A professional log can contain date, purpose, format, duration, consultant, pathway, competency area, feedback themes, agreed actions, and whether verification was supplied. The patient record should contain only clinically necessary consultation information and decisions, not credential administration or unnecessary details about other group members.
EMDRSuite does not match therapists with consultants, determine whether hours qualify, verify credentials, record meetings, expose patient notes to a consultant, or convert advice into a treatment plan. Use the association's official forms and a separate, authorized professional-development system where required.
EMDR supervision and consultation
Five relationships that can look similar but do different jobs
Define the relationship before choosing a supervisor or consultant, sharing case material, paying for hours, or relying on a signature for training or credentials.
Clinical or legal supervision
What it may mean
An accountable relationship shaped by licensure, employment, contract, regulator, and local law; it may include authority, evaluation, and responsibility not present in consultation.
Verify before relying on it
Supervisor eligibility, scope, decision authority, emergency escalation, evaluation duties, insurance, confidentiality, and jurisdiction.
Keep the record boundary clear
Use the employer or regulator's required system. Do not assume a consultation log satisfies supervisory documentation.
Basic-training consultation
What it may mean
Structured support integrated into an approved EMDR training pathway to develop foundational application of the model and procedures.
Verify before relying on it
Approved course, consultant eligibility, timing, individual or group rules, attendance, required cases, observation, and completion evidence.
Keep the record boundary clear
Use the current training provider's forms. A useful external case discussion may not count toward course completion.
Credential consultation
What it may mean
Consultation intended for a named certification or accreditation pathway, with its own competencies, eligible consultants, hours, and verification.
Verify before relying on it
Awarding body, current standard, start date, eligible consultant, hour window, group limits, observed work, evaluation, and sign-off.
Keep the record boundary clear
Keep credential administration separate from the patient record and retain the official verification required by the awarding body.
Non-credential case consultation
What it may mean
Focused professional input on formulation, fidelity, adaptation, uncertainty, or a clinical decision without a promise that the hour qualifies for a credential.
Verify before relying on it
Consultant competence, purpose, confidentiality, minimum necessary case detail, conflicts, recording permission, and who retains clinical responsibility.
Keep the record boundary clear
Record only clinically necessary conclusions in the authorized patient record; keep professional-development notes elsewhere.
Peer support or intervision
What it may mean
Collegial reflection and shared learning that may be valuable but does not automatically create supervision, consultation, evaluation, or qualifying hours.
Verify before relying on it
Group purpose, facilitator role, confidentiality, competence limits, escalation route, employer rules, and whether any formal body recognizes it.
Keep the record boundary clear
Do not label peer attendance as approved supervision or consultation unless the applicable standard explicitly permits it.
Terminology and responsibility differ across countries and organizations. Confirm the current rules with the regulator, employer, training provider, and awarding association that actually apply. EMDRSuite does not verify supervisors, consultants, or qualifying hours.

Printable EMDR case consultation worksheet and hours log
Prepare one focused consultation question, minimize case data, and record the professional outcome separately. This is not an official credential form.
No server storage · no autosave · never enter patient names or direct identifiers · clear every field before leaving
Preparation aid for trained professionals. It does not establish supervision, transfer duty of care, verify a consultant, make an hour eligible, replace an official form, or belong automatically in the patient record.
FAQ
EMDR supervision
Is EMDR consultation the same as supervision?
No. Purpose, legal responsibility, eligibility, and terminology vary; define the relationship under the applicable professional and credential rules.
Does every case consultation count toward certification?
No. EMDRIA expressly distinguishes non-credential case consultation from consultation for training or certification.
What should I prepare for an EMDR case consultation?
Bring one defined question, minimum necessary de-identified context, the current formulation and phase, safety or readiness questions, what has actually occurred, and the decision you need to make.
Can a session recording be shared for consultation?
Only with specific permission and appropriate confidentiality, security, professional, employer, and legal safeguards.
Is the printable worksheet an official EMDRIA form?
No. It is an original preparation aid. Use the current official forms when a training or credential pathway requires them.
Does EMDRSuite track qualifying consultation hours?
No. It does not verify consultants or determine whether an hour satisfies any training, accreditation, or certification pathway.
