IGTP and IGTP-OTS must be named precisely
EMDR Integrative Group Treatment Protocol has been used after shared or mass traumatic events. IGTP-OTS is an adaptation for ongoing traumatic stress. Neither label means generic group EMDR, G-TEP, R-TEP, a standard individual eight-phase session, or permission to use a script found online.
Ongoing stress changes formulation. War, displacement, caregiving, recurrent violence, disaster aftermath, unstable housing, or continuing medical burden can require safeguarding, practical support, multidisciplinary care, and repeated reassessment rather than treating every response as a past-memory target.
The evidence base mixes designs, ages, events, and protocol variants
The group EMDR systematic review counted 22 studies with 1,739 participants, including 13 IGTP studies and four IGTP-OTS studies. It found encouraging outcomes but substantial methodological challenges, including many one-arm designs.
A field study treated 332 child earthquake survivors without a randomized untreated comparison. A study of 44 dementia caregivers used immediate versus delayed assignment and reported short-term gains, while a recurrent-interpersonal-trauma pilot included seven women. These studies answer different questions.
New IGTP-OTS evidence is feasibility evidence
A 2026 randomized feasibility study assigned 34 parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders to IGTP-OTS or control. It reported feasibility and trauma-stress reductions, but 19 intervention and 15 control participants cannot establish broad effectiveness, rare harms, or the best comparator.
Results in Italian parents, earthquake survivors, caregivers, or interpersonal trauma cannot be transferred automatically to children, refugees, workplaces, active violence, or online groups. Selection, dose, facilitator training, cultural adaptation, outcome measurement, and follow-up all matter.
Group privacy and product scope remain explicit
Plan consent, group membership, developmental assent, interpreter roles, privacy limits, non-recording, emergency contacts, disclosures, dissociation, stop signals, missed sessions, reconnection, individual follow-up, and a pathway when ongoing danger is disclosed.
EMDRSuite does not offer multi-patient group rooms, IGTP or IGTP-OTS worksheets, scripts, training, automatic triage, or group documentation. Its individual therapist-patient workflow cannot be described as delivery of either group protocol.
FAQ
EMDR IGTP protocol
Is IGTP-OTS the same as IGTP?
No. IGTP-OTS is adapted for ongoing traumatic stress; evidence for each context should remain separate.
How strong is the evidence?
Promising but heterogeneous, with many uncontrolled studies and small randomized or feasibility samples.
Can IGTP be used during ongoing danger?
A protocol does not remove the need for safeguarding, practical intervention, consent, and repeated risk assessment.
Does EMDRSuite implement IGTP groups?
No. It supports individual therapist-patient rooms, not group protocols or protected materials.
