ART means Accelerated Resolution Therapy here, not art therapy

Editorial policy

Shared eye movements do not make ART and EMDR the same

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a brief trauma-focused method using imagery, sets of horizontal eye movements and voluntary image replacement or rescripting. EMDR is an eight-phase psychotherapy using target assessment, dual attention, bilateral stimulation, installation, body scan and reevaluation.

ART in this comparison does not mean expressive art therapy. Similar visual procedures and ART's historical relationship to EMDR do not make training, scripts, mechanisms, dose or evidence interchangeable.

ART is promising, but its comparative evidence remains limited

A 2024 systematic review found five studies with 337 enrolled and 250 completing participants. Effects were promising, but heterogeneity and too few low-risk-of-bias studies prevented meta-analysis. One randomized attention-control trial included 57 service members and veterans and reported improvement after about four sessions.

Neither study directly compared ART with EMDR. Pre-post effects, brief dose and completion rates cannot establish non-inferiority, superiority or the same durability as a guideline-supported treatment.

Guideline position should be stated plainly

The 2023 VA/DoD guideline strongly recommends CPT, EMDR or prolonged exposure for PTSD and found insufficient evidence to recommend for or against ART. Insufficient evidence is not proof of no benefit; it is also not permission to market equivalence.

Consent should distinguish evidence stage, clinician training, expected dose, imagery procedures, alternatives, uncertainty and outcome review. Do not claim that rapid change proves permanent reconsolidation or historical accuracy.

EMDRSuite does not implement ART

Remote visual work needs a clear stop process, visibility checks, accessibility, privacy, emergency plans and reconnection. A moving stimulus is only one technical component of a psychotherapy.

EMDRSuite provides bilateral visual and auditory stimulation for EMDR. It does not deliver ART scripts, direct image replacement, certify ART training, infer reconsolidation, choose treatments or turn a lightbar into ART.

FAQ

EMDR vs ART

Is ART the same as EMDR?

No. They share some visual and trauma-focused elements but use different protocols and evidence bases.

Does ART mean art therapy?

Not here. ART means Accelerated Resolution Therapy; expressive art therapy is a separate intervention.

Is ART proven faster or better than EMDR?

No direct comparative trial establishes that claim. ART studies are promising but limited.

Can EMDRSuite deliver ART?

No. It provides EMDR stimulation controls and does not implement ART procedures.
