EMDR tapping is BLS; EFT tapping targets acupoints
In EMDR, alternating taps can replace eye movements or tones as bilateral stimulation within an eight-phase protocol. Emotional Freedom Techniques combines attention to distress, verbal statements and tapping a sequence of proposed acupoints. The tap is therefore embedded in a different model and procedure.
Calling both interventions tapping erases assessment, target selection, cognitive elements, set structure, training and evidence. Alternating a screen or device does not deliver EFT, and tapping an acupoint sequence is not automatically EMDR.
One small direct trial does not settle equivalence
A randomized study allocated 46 participants with PTSD to EMDR or EFT and reported improvement in both groups with similar effect sizes after treatment and at three months. It was one small trial, and the authors called the theoretical basis of EFT speculative and recommended dismantling research.
Later reviews report positive EFT signals, but study quality, active comparators and author affiliations require careful appraisal. The VA/DoD guideline found insufficient evidence to recommend for or against EFT while strongly recommending EMDR, CPT and prolonged exposure.
Separate outcome evidence from mechanism claims
A treatment can show symptom change without proving that meridians, acupoints or a proposed energy mechanism caused it. The acupoint ingredient review and later meta-analyses do not make every EFT script, diagnosis or self-help use equivalent to clinician-delivered PTSD treatment.
Explain the exact method, evidence quality, alternatives, training, adverse-effect monitoring and plan if symptoms worsen. Combining EFT and EMDR increases procedural complexity and should not be presented as automatically synergistic.
EMDRSuite is not an EFT app
Remote care still needs privacy, location, emergency planning, stop signals and informed consent. A visual or auditory bilateral stimulus does not guide acupoint sequences or verbal setup statements.
EMDRSuite supports therapist-controlled EMDR stimulation and video. It does not teach EFT tapping, select acupoints, provide scripts, measure energy, validate mechanisms or recommend self-treatment.
FAQ
EMDR vs EFT tapping
Is EMDR tapping the same as EFT?
No. EMDR tapping is bilateral stimulation inside EMDR; EFT uses proposed acupoints and a different procedure.
Has EFT been compared directly with EMDR?
Yes, in one randomized study of 46 participants, which is too small to establish broad equivalence.
Do EFT results prove an energy-meridian mechanism?
No. Outcome evidence and mechanism evidence are separate questions.
Does EMDRSuite provide EFT tapping?
No. It provides EMDR stimulation controls and does not guide EFT sequences or scripts.
