Understand the three permission layers

A video room can fail even when the website is working. Access may be blocked at the website prompt, in the browser's saved site settings, or by the operating system's privacy controls. Check those layers in that order before changing hardware or abandoning the session link.

Permission labels vary by browser and device, but the decision is usually allow for this visit, allow while using the site, or block. A previous block can prevent the prompt from appearing again until the saved setting is changed.

Recover camera and microphone access

In Chrome, open the site's permission controls from the address bar or Privacy and security > Site settings, then review Camera and Microphone. Confirm that the intended devices are selected and reload the room after changing permission.

In Safari on Mac, review Safari > Settings > Websites for Camera, Microphone, and Auto-Play, then check macOS Privacy & Security if access remains unavailable. On phones and tablets, both browser-level and operating-system app permissions may matter.

Unlock and verify bilateral audio

Browsers commonly restrict audible playback until the user clicks or taps the page. The patient should use the room's audio-enable action before the set, then confirm that sound alternates clearly between left and right.

Use stereo headphones, verify they are not connected in mono mode, check channel orientation and comfortable volume, and close another app if it has exclusive control of the audio device. Never assume a successful video call proves bilateral sound is ready.

Run a two-minute pre-session test

Use the exact patient link, device, browser, camera, microphone, and headphones planned for the appointment. Test permission prompts, local preview, incoming and outgoing speech, left-right audio, visual smoothness, pause, video hiding, orientation change, and re-entry after reload.

Record only the operational outcome needed for support; do not place clinical targets or patient session content in troubleshooting messages. If video or audio still fails, use the agreed backup communication route and decide clinically whether to continue, adapt, or reschedule.

FAQ

browser permissions for EMDR video

Why did the camera prompt stop appearing?

The browser may have saved a previous block. Open site permissions, change Camera and Microphone to allow or ask, then reload the room.

Why does video work but bilateral audio stay silent?

Audio may require a click or tap before playback, the wrong output device may be selected, or the headphones may not provide distinct stereo channels.

Should patients switch browsers during the appointment?

Only if a brief, agreed troubleshooting step is appropriate. Testing the intended browser before the appointment is calmer and leaves the backup plan available.

Does granting permission let EMDRSuite record at any time?

No. Browser permission allows the active feature to request the device while the site is in use; actual media behavior still depends on the room state and browser indicators.
